What are veneers?
This is similar to teeth contouring where cosmetic procedure is performed to enhance your smile. While teeth contouring involve sculpting teeth to achieve desired shape, veneers can help you achieve your desired esthetic appearance not only by changing the shape but also color, angle, or spacing of your teeth. If multiple front teeth are chipped or fractured, veneers is a great option to help restore the look of your teeth. Although there are different types of veneers available, veneers are generally thin shells (can be as thin as contact lenses!) that are permanently placed in the front surface of your front teeth. They are stain-resistant, so you don’t have to worry about your veneers turning yellow over time
What are veneers for?
Veneers are placed to fix variety of problems such as:
- Fractures and cracks
- Gaps between teeth
- Irregularly shaped teeth
How long do veneers last?
Veneers typically last approximately 10-15 years. To make your veneers last as long as possible, it requires daily maintenance where you will need to floss and brush every day in addition to bi-annual scaling by your hygienist.
How are veneers done and how many visits are required?
A consultation with the dentist is mandatory as with any other dental procedures. This consultation session helps the dentist to figure out what your wants and needs are to achieve your most ideal smile. The dentist will be working alongside with you to come to a final collaborative decision in regards to the size, shape, and shade of the veneers. Once it has been decided that veneers are, in fact, a suitable procedure for you, the dentist will then fabricate a treatment plan which is to proceed in the next appointment.
A thin layer of your teeth will be carefully removed or “filed” down to sculpt targeted set of teeth. This amount of enamel removed will provide space for veneers to be bonded. Although local anesthetics may not be required depending on the patient preference and sensitivity, it is usually administered for your maximum comfort during the course of procedure. Once a thin layer of enamel is removed, impressions of your teeth will be taken, which is to be sent to the lab for fabrication of veneers; this will take approximately 1-2 weeks to fabricate the perfect veneers tailored just for you. Temporary veneers will be fabricated and bonded by the end of your preparation procedure, which will be replaced by the permanent veneers once they are ready.
Once permanent veneers are ready, the dentist will examine its fit, color as well as shape. The dentist will make necessary adjustments to create the perfect fit and look that are right for you. Once adjustments are made to match your desired appearance, veneers will be permanently cemented onto the teeth as a final step! It is advised to come back after one or two weeks for a quick check up of the state of the gums as well as veneer’s placement.
