Invisalign

Invisalign has been out in the market since 1997 and has since gained its popularity due to the “invisibility” of the orthodontic appliance. An Invisalign treatment involves a set of aligners which are basically clear trays that promotes teeth movement; these aligners serve the same purpose as the wires used in the traditional metal braces.

At what age is best to start Invisalign Treatment?

Invisalign is often recommended for young adults and onwards. Since Invisalign is not permanently bonded to your teeth surfaces, there is a potential for losing aligners which can be costly to replace. Once the dentist has come to a diagnosis, a customized treatment plan will be generated using computer simulations.

Is it painful?

As with any other orthodontic appliances, discomfort is expected. You will be required to switch out your aligners to a new set of aligners approximately every two weeks. You may experience discomfort with new set of aligners as they aim to promote further teeth movement to their new position. However, the discomfort will not last more than two days. Advil and/ or Tylenol also help to alleviate pain associated with Invisalign. If you are experiencing extreme pain (which is very rare), please give us a call right away!

How many visits to the dental office?

You may be asked to come back once a month in the beginning of the Invisalign treatment for the dentist to assess and monitor the progression of teeth movement. It may be once every two months; it depends on each individual’s treatment progression.

Do Invisalign require special maintenance?

Invisalign not only requires special maintenance but also responsibility. Invisalign aligners are easy to misplace and lose. In contrast to the traditional metal braces where brackets are permanently bonded to hold the wire in place without an option to remove, Invisalign aligners are removable. Aligners should be taken out of the mouth when eating, drinking, chewing gum and/or smoking. You should brush your teeth before placing the aligners back in your mouth to prevent cavities from developing. Also note that Invisalign aligners should be switched to a new set of aligners every two weeks to promote advancement of teeth movement. A set of aligners are strictly required to be placed in your mouth at least 20 hours a day.
